Choosing Glasses
Evening glasses or sunglasses – which should you get?
For most people, orange evening glasses are the natural first choice for regular evening use.
Red night glasses filter both blue and green light more strongly and also alter the color palette more.
So if you want to sit on the couch in the evening, watch television, use your phone, and act fairly normally, evening glasses are generally the more natural choice.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for the strongest possible filtering late in the evening or at night, night glasses are designed for exactly that purpose.
What is the difference between daytime, evening, and nighttime glasses?
Day, evening, and night glasses are designed for different times of the day, and it is not just a matter of a different colored lens.
The easiest way to remember this is:
Yellow = day
Orange = evening
Red = late evening and night
Day glasses let a lot of visible light through but strongly attenuate the shorter end of the spectrum.
Evening glasses filter short-wavelength light significantly more strongly.
Night glasses go even further and filter the visible light spectrum most strongly.
So, the same idea, three different times of use.
How do I know which glasses are right for me?
Lenses first, then style.
Daytime glasses for the day, evening glasses for the evening, and nighttime glasses for late evening/night. Once you know which lenses you need, you can focus on the more fun part: choosing a frame style. On the product pages, you can also virtually try on glasses on your own face using your phone, tablet, or computer.
If I only buy one pair of glasses, daytime glasses or evening glasses?
We get asked this really often. 😊
If you want one pair of glasses that is as versatile as possible from morning to night, choose daytime glasses. They are the easiest all-purpose option for work, screens, bright indoor lights, and also light evening use.
If your main goal is to maximize evening relaxation and reduce short-wavelength light before bedtime, choose evening glasses.
And if you are one of those who are still wide awake at the point when your body should already understand that it is now night, night glasses are the most powerful option.
The best combo, however, is day + evening: daytime glasses for the day and evening glasses for the evening. That way, you don't have to try to do everything with a single lens.
Why are North Ray lenses tinted?
Because effective filtering is visible in the lens. If the lens remains completely clear, the filtering is usually quite light.
Our lenses are made for different times of the day, so their color and filtering strength also vary:
Yellow for daytime – filters out shorter blue light, but still lets a lot of light through. That's why it can be used worry-free from morning to evening.
Orange for evening – filters out significantly more, because in the evening the goal is to reduce short-wavelength light more.
Red for nighttime – the strongest option when you want to keep the ambient light as “night-like” as possible.
So the color isn't just an aesthetic choice, but says a lot about what the lens actually does.
And that's exactly why we don't have a clear lens just because it would look inconspicuous. We prefer beautiful, clarifying colors and real filtering strengths measured with a spectrometer.
You can read more about our optimal filtering strengths here.
What about clear blue light glasses? Why don't you make those?
Clear blue-light glasses can filter out some blue light, but based on our own measurements and product development, their filtering is not strong enough for our liking.
We want to offer glasses that do what they promise. That is why North Ray lenses are tinted.
During the day, we use a yellow lens that filters out shorter blue light but still lets a lot of daylight through. In the evening, the filtering intensifies and the lens turns orange. At night, a red lens is used, which filters even more strongly.
So, for us, the color is not an afterthought, but part of the lens's function.
Our approach is simple: we prefer a visibly tinted lens that filters properly over a completely clear lens whose filtering is too weak.

Daytime glasses
Are blue light glasses only for computers?
No. Computers and other screens are one of the most common uses, but daytime glasses are made for many other types of artificial daylight as well.
They can be used, for example, at work, in the bright LED lights of offices and shops, on your phone, in front of the television, and while driving.
Daytime glasses can be used from morning to evening – in front of screens, at work, in bright indoor lighting, and even while driving.
Can you wear sunglasses all day?
can be worn above.
Daytime lenses are designed specifically for easy, prolonged use throughout the day. They transmit a high amount of visible light while strongly filtering the shorter wavelengths of the spectrum.
In the evening, you can continue wearing the daytime lenses or switch to orange evening lenses if you prefer stronger filtering before bedtime.
Can you wear sunglasses in the evening?
It works well.
If you want to watch TV, relax at home, or use screens without the whole world turning orange, the yellow daytime lens is also very comfortable for many people in the evening.
If, on the other hand, you want to maximize evening relaxation, then it is worth switching to orange evening glasses.
Can daytime glasses be worn outdoors—do they replace sunglasses?
Yes, daytime glasses can also be used outdoors.
We think that outdoors you should primarily enjoy the natural light as freely as possible, but everyone experiences the brightness differently. If the light feels intense to your eyes or you want light protection, yellow daytime glasses can be a comfortable option.
They are not a substitute for dark sunglasses, but rather light protection when you still want to see the surroundings bright and natural.
North Ray's blue light glasses also have UV400 protection, so they protect the eyes from UV radiation.
Here too, it is best to go with your own feeling. If it is good to be outdoors without glasses, let the light come in. If your eyes need a little protection, daytime glasses are also good to have with you outdoors.
Evening and Night Glasses
Can the North Ray night light and reading glasses be used at the same time?
Yes – and they go really well together.
Evening light affects the lighting of the entire room. Evening glasses, on the other hand, filter all the light that enters your eyes through the lenses.
However, you don't have to use them together all the time. Just changing the evening lighting makes the environment feel completely different, and the glasses give you even more filtration when you want it.
Can people with low vision use a computer?
Of course.
Working on a computer in the evenings is one of the most common reasons to use blue light glasses.
However, if your work involves image editing or anything else where colors need to appear accurately, daytime glasses may be a better choice for those tasks.
When is the best time to put on evening glasses?
For most people, a good time is about 1–3 hours before bedtime, or whenever you want to start transitioning from day to evening.
There's no need to obsess over the exact time.
For many, things work out quite naturally: the lights at home get warmer in the evening, they put on their evening glasses, and the rest of the evening becomes a little more relaxed.
Can the evening class use phones?
Yes – and that’s exactly what they’re used for.
Glasses don’t prevent you from using your phone, of course. They filter the light that enters your eyes from your phone and your surroundings.
So if an evening without your phone isn’t a realistic plan, no worries. 😄
Can evening guests watch television?
Yes, you can.
Just be aware that the orange lens alters colors. The blue sea won't look quite the same shade of blue anymore.
For most people, this won't interfere with regular TV series, news, or YouTube viewing, but if you're doing something where colors need to be perfectly accurate, keep this in mind.
Can you read with reading glasses?
Yes.
However, an orange lens lets less light through than a daylight lens, so you may need a bit more light for reading in very dim conditions.
In this case, evening glasses and a good warm-toned reading light make a pretty good pair.
Why does the world look orange through evening glasses?
Because the lens actually filters the visible light spectrum.
So the orange tint isn't just for looks. It's a result of which wavelengths the lens lets through and which it filters out.
And with red night glasses, the world becomes even more distinctly red.
That's kind of the whole point. 😄
Do eyes get used to orange or red lenses?
Many people get used to it surprisingly quickly.
At first, the colors may look strange, of course, but the brain is quite adept at adapting to a changed color palette.
Red night lenses are clearly a more intense experience than yellow or orange ones, so getting used to them may take a little longer.
What if I don't notice anything special about the glasses?
It is entirely possible.
Not everyone experiences tinted lenses in the same way, and there is no intention that putting on the glasses should be followed by some dramatic “wow effect”.
It is better to look at the bigger picture: whether you are using the right lens at the right time and what other lighting is around you.
Evening glasses initially give me a headache or make me feel strange. Is that normal?
Some people may experience a slight headache, eye strain, or otherwise feel strange during the first few uses. Colored lenses change your vision quite a bit, and your eyes and brain need a moment to adjust to the new color palette.
Often, you will start to feel better after just a few uses.
However, you don't have to force yourself to get used to them. Start with shorter periods of use and take a break if you feel uncomfortable.
If the headache is severe, lasts for a long time, or returns every time you wear the lenses, please contact us. In that case, we should see whether a lighter lens or another option would suit you better.
Blue light and filtering
How much blue light do North Ray glasses filter?
There isn't really one single percentage for this.
Blue light is not a single wavelength, but part of the visible light spectrum. That is why the more interesting question for us is which wavelengths the lens filters and how strongly.
Our day, evening, and night lenses differ greatly in this regard.
The day lens strongly filters the shorter end of the spectrum but still lets a lot of visible light through. The orange evening lens filters much more broadly, and the red night lens filters most strongly of all.
That is why we prefer to compare lenses based on their entire filtering profile rather than on a single, fine-sounding percentage.
Have North Ray lenses actually been measured?
Of course. 😊
Our lens filtration is not accidental; we carefully plan which wavelengths we want to filter at different times of the day and how strongly.
The lenses are then measured in the laboratory so that we can ensure that the filtration works as designed.
Spectra, light transmission, and the behavior of different wavelengths are part of our everyday product development work. Therefore, the measurement is not some separate “certificate” for us, but rather a way to check that the finished lens does exactly what it is supposed to do.
If you would like to read more about why day, evening, and night lenses filter differently, you can continue here.
Do evening and night glasses also filter green light?
Yes.
The stronger the evening and nighttime filtering, the further it extends across the visible light spectrum.
That is why, especially in the case of red night lenses, it is not worth thinking of them merely as “blue-light glasses.” They affect a much broader part of the visible light spectrum.
Is the night mode setting on devices the same thing as blue light glasses?
Not exactly.
Night Shift and similar settings are a good start because they shift the screen's light towards the warmer end of the spectrum.
However, if you want to filter short-wavelength light very effectively, the screen would practically have to turn quite red. In that case, the colors would also change significantly.
In addition, it is surprisingly difficult to find precise information about the “blue light filters” offered by different device manufacturers regarding which wavelengths they filter, how much they filter, and how much light still gets through. The setting may have the same name, but the filtering may not be the same.
With glasses, we know exactly what the lens filters. And perhaps the most practical difference is this: with glasses, you don't have to adjust every phone, screen, TV, and light separately—all the light passing through the lens is filtered in the same way.
So Night Shift is a good addition, but if you want a precisely known filter that affects your entire environment, glasses make it a lot easier.
Prescription, clips and your own glasses
Can North Ray glasses be made with custom prescriptions?
Yes, you can, and we are particularly proud of these.
North Ray day, evening, and night lenses can be custom-made to your prescription as either single-vision or progressive lenses. The lenses are digitally surfaced, the prescription details are checked before production, and the entire process is carried out in Europe in accordance with high-quality optical standards.
So these are not just ordinary glasses with a little colour added. You get the same carefully designed North Ray spectra combined with high-quality prescription lenses, excellent coatings, and optics tailored precisely to your prescription.
If you wear glasses every day, this is often the most worry-free solution; you can see clearly while also getting the exact filtration designed for that time of day.

Discover prescription glasses here.
Can prescription lenses be fitted in the glasses?
Yes.
North Ray glasses can also be made with reading prescriptions. This is a good option for reading, crafts, or other close-up work.
Are North Ray glasses available with progressive lenses?
Yes, you can.
North Ray’s spectrum-optimized lenses can also be made as custom multifocal lenses, meaning you get vision correction for different distances in the same pair of glasses, along with the specific day, evening, or night lens filtration you choose.
Multifocal lenses are made according to your personal prescription and use personalized progressive technology to make transitioning between different viewing distances as smooth as possible. The lenses are made in Europe, and the prescription details are checked by optical experts before production.
So if you use multifocals, you don’t have to settle for clip-ons or give up colored lenses. You can get proper, high-quality multifocal glasses with North Ray’s own filtration.

I already have glasses. What options do I have?
There are several options.
You can order North Rayt with your own prescription, use the clips over your own glasses, or choose a frame style that fits over your own glasses.
If you're not sure which option would be best for you, send us a message. A photo of your own glasses is also often very helpful.
Clip-ons or glasses made with your own prescription?
If you use tinted lenses often, prescription lenses made with your own prescription are usually the most worry-free option.
Clip-ons, on the other hand, are a handy way to use daytime, evening, or night lenses with your own glasses without completely new prescription glasses.
So clip-ons are an easy way to get started. Prescription lenses are particularly suitable when they will be used a lot.
Are the clips strong?
Our goal has been to make the clips as lightweight, unobtrusive and easy to use over your own glasses as possible.
A clip will always add a little extra weight to your glasses, but the design is as slim as possible. We have received a lot of positive feedback from customers saying that the clips fit well and do not feel heavy when worn.
The fit will always depend slightly on the size and shape of your own glasses, but for most people, a clip is a really easy way to use North Ray day, evening or night lenses without needing completely new glasses.
However, if you know that you wear tinted glasses from morning to night every day, North Ray lenses made to your own prescription may be an even more carefree option.
You can find our full range of clips here.
